It's a Canadian invasion tonight at the Empty Bottle, so prepare to be serenaded to a very happy place, eh? After releasing a 12" via One Big Silence, AUSTRA signed up with Domino and Paper Bag to release Feel It Break this summer. Playing a warm, hazy sort of electro-goth, the LP is synthetic and repetitive, and, in the words of Pitchfork, "there's plenty of GIORGIO MORODER in its DNA, but it's not dance music. Instead, it's music for a planetarium, or maybe for a mid-1980s PBS science documentary. AUSTRA's synth riffs don't pound or undulate; they flutter and envelop. And STELMANIS doesn't sing over the top of their tracks; she emits sound from somewhere in the thick of it." Fellow Paper Baggers YOUNG GALAXY return with the "sexy, spacious, haunted by ghosts in silver, black and primary colours," tracks from their third LP, Shapeshifiting. After tours with ARCADE FIRE, STARS and TWIN SHADOW, YOUNG GALAXY's live show matches the epic rock delivered on their recorded efforts and they're joined by a pair of twin sisters who go by TASSEOMANCY. On their latest LP, Ulalume, the baroque-folk duo keep it otherworldly with their ephemeral, textural minor-key melodies and sing with what Toronto Life dubbed "a brittle witchiness."
