Artists can be both a barometer of the cultural and political landscape, as well as active participants in addressing the challenges a society faces. In Bridges Not Walls, Dance NOW! Miami, does both things, tackling what is dividing and bringing people together in these unsettled times. With the signature sinewy and graceful choreography of company Co-Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, the piece will have its World Premiere as part of their spring show, Contemporanea. In addition, the evening will include an encore presentation of Ritmo Jondo, the reconstructed 1953 Doris Humphrey flamenco-inspired classic.
Taking as its jumping off point the recent political struggles and turmoil that have divided America, Bridges Not Walls is an investigation of the human condition. Differences among people cause us to fear one another, separating us, instead of allowing us to find common ground. But inspired by the Barack Obama quote – We must guard against a tribalism that is built on us against them – the work explores ways to overcome these natural instincts and to find compassion for one another in a diverse society. Bridges Not Walls will include original visual art by a South Florida-based artist, and a compelling musical score.
Also on the program, after its critically acclaimed South Florida Premiere last December, is the newly staged Ritmo Jondo, presented with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and Funding Arts Network. With its choreography inspired by the deep rhythms of flamenco, its archetypal Spanish story, a dramatic musical score by Catalan composer Carlos Surinach, and its powerful choreography from dance great Doris Humphrey, the piece is a natural for Florida audiences. It has been reconstructed on the company by Daniel Lewis, the beloved former Dean of the Dance Department of Miami's New World School of the Arts. Lewis will also introduce the performance in-person.
