Chicago mainstays TORTOISE come out their shells for two very special performances here tonight. Twenty years after its founding, the band's signature and singularly inimitable sound-a fluid intersection of dub, dance, jazz, techno, rock and classical minimalism, with no part overwhelming or dominating the whole remains an American and international original. Calling the ensemble prolific is an understatement - in 2010 Thrill Jockey released a 13 minute track Ice Ice Gravy and a Japanese-only release Why Waste Time? Continually forging new sonic territory, the revered quintet have been at the forefront of musical innovation for over ten years now, and they are widely thought of as one of the most dynamic and enduring ensembles to have emerged in the Chicago rock landscape. Opening tonight’s later event is Thrill Jockey label-mate JASON URICK, whose I Love You - constructed entirely on his laptop and released earlier this year - has been called “perfect music for science fiction fanatics” by Blurt and “his best effort yet,” by Pitchfork.
