The Kitchen presents a weekend of film and music celebrating the life of musician and composer Arthur Russell, a maverick figure in the downtown New York music scene from the 1970s until his untimely death in 1992. Russell’s distinct electro-acoustic sound as a cellist and vocalist traversed the worlds of pop, rock, and new music. He also released hit disco records under assumed monikers including Loose Joints and Indian Ocean, which revealed his understanding of the radical potential of dance music. Included in this tribute weekend is a special screening of the new documentary about the artist’s life and music directed by Matt Wolf which incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Russell’s family, friends, and closest collaborators.
