Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
Chicago’s own instrumental rock gods PELICAN are returning to us tonight to help celebrate the big 25th Anniversary. The four-piece, now scattered across the USA, will be making their fifteenth appearance on the Bottle stage tonight and it's an honor to welcome them back. With a ferocious velocity, they've continuously affirmed their spot as one of the most crushing instrumental bands today. Together for close over years, PELICAN has paved a very sizeable road for those of their kind, toeing a line between genres of alternative rock and metal. With a tactile approach to their sludgey, earth-shaking songwriting, they're able to rip faces off with torrential riffs and the occasional, yet epic, drum burst.
On their 2017 release, Chalice Hymnal (Temporary Residence), GRAILS take the sky-high riff-based heaviness of their earlier albums and distill it into a nuanced, widescreen opus. The perennial influences of mid-20th century Western film scores, obscure library music, and psychedelic krautrock are indelibly imprinted, but the new LP exudes an eerie patience in unfurling the many layers of its subtle details. No one else sounds like GRAILS, and on Chalice Hymnal they sound more like themselves than ever before.
Singer/guitarist/songwriter Evan Patterson is best known as the leader of Louisville's YOUNG WIDOWS, but he emerged in late-2013 with the mysterious moniker of JAYE JAYLE. Evolving from songs Patterson wrote on his own and inspired by extensive time spent traveling in New Mexico, JAY JAYLE mines minimalist rhythms and acoustic drones that call to mind original blues, cult country, and krautrock percussion.
The fourth round of #EB25 shows is upon us, & we're bringing back even more influential bands of Bottle's past. Keep a close watch for more announcements as we celebrate through 2017.
