Drunk in love this Valentine's Day? Or not? Grab a pal, a punch and some pudding for PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, screening at the hall!
Director P.T. Anderson's mid-career foray into the "romantic comedy" genre is an airy yet jarring portrait of love at first sight between Barry (Adam Sandler), a forlorn and repressed novelty salesmen antagonized by his sisters and colleagues, and Lena (Emily Watson), the swooning object of his awkward affection. While he exploits an airline mileage promotion by stockpiling pudding cups (a subplot that closely mimics the true story of David Philips, who collected over 1.25 million frequent flyer miles in 1999), Barry himself is the embarrassed target of a slapdash extortion scheme that will require a full heart to overcome. Appropriately absurd performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Luis Guzman contribute to a surreal atmosphere further shaped by Jon Brion's wispy music and subtle "moving paintings" by the late artist Jeremy Blake.
