After disappearing from the underground’s hazy spotlight more than 18 years ago, MERCURY REV founder DAVID BAKER returns with an exciting new project alongside WILL MACLEAN, psychedelic pop band VARIETY LIGHTS. The duo make their Empty Bottle debut tonight in support of their stellar 2012 album Central Flow, out via Fire Records, an album MOJO praises for its “unexpectedly warming tunes from an individual long thought to have an aversion to conventional song forms.” A pair of vintage synth addicts, VARIETY LIGHTS combine analogue textures with electronic psychedelia, an array of drum machines, heavily effected guitars and layered, straining vocals to dizzying results that is sure to thrill in a live setting. One of Chicago’s quintessential psych bands, DARK FOG returns tonight. The tuneful trio churns out fuzzed-out, distorted, three-minute anthems, burying vocals under playful guitar heroics and echoplexed pedal-babble sludge. Noisy electronic experimentalist KENNETH ZAWACKI, performing under just his first name, returns to the Bottle to kick things off tonight.
