AMEN DUNES is the solo project of DAMON MCMAHON, a New Yorker who headlines this week’s FREE MONDAY with a mix of folk, psychedelia and dreamy atmospherics that recall mellowed out ROKY ERICKSON or SYD BARRETT. Building songs with layers of reverby, delay-heavy guitar lines, hollowed out drums and haunting vocals, AMEN DUNES 2012 release Through Donkey Jaw, out via Sacred Bones, drew the attention of post-rock stalwarts GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR, who picked him up for a few Midwest dates before MCMAHON sets off to explore northern America on his own. E+, featuring members of DISAPPEARS and HEAVY TIMES, is a band that shimmers with alien vocal harmonies, infectious synth flourishes and steady driving beats. Giant System says their songs are “like spooky stories about ancient astronauts waking up from carbon sleep on distant planets” and their live shows typically result in a state of rock-the-fuck-out hypnosis. Experimental pop trio SONOI combines tasteful, ambient atmospherics with textured, thumping melodic lines, defying generalizations with their lovely pop songs.
