This West Coast band gets frequently tagged with the label, “folk rock”. Sure, these guys apparently do love their Dylan, but not the idealized Dylan full of coffeehouse musings; rather they’re somewhat indebted to a Dylan manifestation who likes his guitars a bit too loud, and his lyrics a bit too pointed. Two Gallants are fairly punk, exceedingly melodic, and full of bracing, blistering soul. Want a better comparison? Well, we could say they’re a bit Uncle Tupelo, a bit Bright Eyes, and even a bit Afghan Whigs. If you’re confused, just keep an ear out for their beautifully lonely and aggressive new album The Bloom And The Blight. The slurry and weary rock of PAPA opens this show.
