Jazz Standard, New York, NY
The New York Times called him “the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.” Jon Hendricks hailed him as “a real Prince of Song, upholding a noble tradition as only he can.” “He” is Lionel Frederick “Freddy” Cole – singer and pianist extraordinaire, and a masterful interpreter of The Great American Songbook. Freddy has been a Jazz Standard stalwart since 2003, and this engagement is another highlight of our ongoing JS:10 anniversary series. On his latest album, Talk To Me (High Note, 2011), Freddy explores an eclectic repertoire ranging from two Bill Withers songs (“Can We Pretend” and “Lovely Day”) to such Tin Pan Alley rarities as “I Was Telling Her About You.” Stanley Crouch wrote: “As a swinging romantic balladeer, Freddy Cole has a special position in the pantheon of contemporary American music. Through his work, integrity assumes its artistic identity in terms of pace, character and heart.”
