Who doesn’t like happy little pop songs that are secretly about violent killing sprees? CHAIRLIFT might just be the first band to realize that has been what’s missing from the musical landscape and on their newest effort, Something. Upping the ante on the dream pop found on their first LP, the duo throw synths, ethereal breathing and existentialist lyrics about nightmare-scapes into their alternatingly joyfully expressive and charmingly deadpan tracks. In the words of Pitchfork, CHAIRLIFT “have allowed themselves to go all the way in expressing a powerful sentiment…and opened themselves up to writing truly great pop.” Cambridge quartet ALT-J has been receiving loads of attention from both sides of the pond for their debut LP, An Awesome Wave. To quote the British press, who are notoriously rapturous when it comes to new music, the reactions to the LP have “been over-the-top and excitable,” (The Guardian) praising the band’s "innovative and electrifying musicianship", their "exemplary songwriting", "creatively ambitious lyrics" and "captivating blend of insatiable grooves and profound poignancy”. So, you know, no pressure fellas. Local blogging ladies STIC OF THE WEEK, spin throughout, this is going to be one gorgeous way to close out your palooza weekend.
