Dramatic and stylish singer, composer, orchestrator, and producer Julie Feeney, winner of the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year (Ireland's equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize), combines her "mesmerizing stage presence and eccentric pop genius" (Hot Press), taking an avant-garde approach to her innovative, one-of-a-kind sound that, while rooted in classical music, straddles both the pop and theatrical worlds. Hailed by The Washington Post as "The Emerald Isle's Original," Feeney creates music that is widely broadcast on TV and radio, garnering praise from press both international and domestic. The New York Times has called her output "charming, urbane, and dreamy," and The Guardian (UK) simply declared: "The world will listen."
Feeney has performed many sold-out shows in America, Ireland, England, France, Italy, Germany, and Holland, appearing solo, with her own ensemble, or with numerous orchestras for which she has orchestrated and composed. After the release of her debut album 13 Songs (2006), The Observer gushed that the project was was "the blossoming of a major talent," adding that "Feeney towers over her contemporaries." Her second album, the genre-spanning symphony Pages (2009), is a subtly complex masterpiece. Feeney composed the record entirely on her own, conducted members of the Irish Chamber Orchestra for the recording session, and sang over what she had just conducted. Listen to the album, and it becomes clear that Feeney's supreme talent in composition and arrangement is matched only by her gorgeous, soaring voice.
After an extensive stint of touring, Feeney is currently busy composing and recording her third album (a completely crowd-funded project) as well as her first opera, due for production in 2013 or 2014. She also spent most of April performing Off-Broadway in New York. A renowned musician, refreshingly original composer, experienced educator, prolific actor, and more, Feeney is a true artist with immense vision. Don't miss what is sure to be an enchanting evening of music at Highline Ballroom.
