21 years and over
Tonight we’re pleased to welcome the undisputed king of bubu music, JANKA NABAY. What, you’ve never heard of bubu music? Sheesh. A frantically-paced electronic dance music with ancient, musical origins, it’s traditional music from the Temme people of Sierra Leone. Last year, NABAY released the first-ever international bubu record, Bubu King via True Panther/Matador records and earlier this spring followed up that effort with An Letah EP out via Luaka Bop. Adding synths and drum machines to the airy hum of blown bamboo shoots and carburetor pipes, NABAY’s bubu connects the dots between lo-fi African techno and bubu’s ancient processional origins. Bassist and composer JOSHUA ABRAMS’ NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY makes its Empty Bottle debut tonight. ABRAMS has been playing and recording as a leader and sideman in projects across multiple genres of music in Chicago for over 15 years, including the release of his extraordinary Natural Information, an LP that was praised as “one of the rough gems of the post-everything musical era” by the New York Times and named as one of the top 50 records of 2010 by Wire. Detroit’s JAMAICAN QUEENS, a new Odd Pop trio featuring former members of PRUSSIA and RESCUE open and M.A.K.U. SOUNDSYSTEM DJ some of the most exciting music from around the world throughout the night.
