Tennessee is widely recognized as the birthplace of popular musical genres including rock & roll, blues, and country. Traditional mountain music from the hills of Appalachia evolved into what is today categorized as bluegrass and Americana. The smoky, distinctly southern vibe of Memphis blues and soul are instantly recognizable, and had a strong influence on the early rock & roll released by the venerable Sun Records. Country music is said to have been born in Bristol and raised in Knoxville before “going corporate” in Music City.
Our local culture is undeniably flavored by our music … and in turn, our music has had an impact on popular culture worldwide. Scruffy City Roots celebrates East Tennessee’s role in American roots music – including but not limited to country, jazz, blues, bluegrass and rock - by featuring musical performances by locally-revered and nationally-renowned artists. They aren’t all from Tennessee; and some of them aren’t even from the United States – but their music has been undeniably influenced by those styles popularized right in our backyard.
Tickets are $15 in advance & $20 day of show.
Scruffy City Roots is produced by Attack Monkey Productions and Heng Dai Media.
