Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
It’s a rare treat to welcome the BLACK LIPS back to our little old room, but we’re mighty excited about hosting them here tonight before they hit the West Fest stage tomorrow afternoon. The BLACK LIPS have been called many things - garage, revival, goofballs, bad kids, outlaws, flower punks - and since their first release back in 2003 on Bomp! the band has toyed with all of these influences and reputations. Their newest LP on Vice Records, Arabia Mountain, is their first with a producer, the one and only MARK RONSON (DURAN DURAN, AMY WINEHOUSE, LILY ALLEN, KAISER CHIEFS). Of the effort Pitchfork praised, "Arabia Mountain's chiseled production and considerably tighter songcraft provides a better forum for showcasing the band's subversive sense of humor. The best songs here play up the dichotomy between their retro sound and modern preoccupations," and further proves the LIPS have not given up the fight to create messily awesome tunes. The K-HOLES began as a dirge surf band in a cramped NYC room intended as a one-off, but the rag-tag dude/chick collective stripped down on the surf, upped the dirge and were recently named on the Best New(ish) New York Bands of 2011 by the Village Voice. Exports of NY-area garage rock trouble makers GOLDEN TRIAGLE, BEZOAR and GEORGIANA STARLINGTON, K-HOLES are an aggressive live presence, whose shows have been compared to a loony-bin riot or a peyote-fever dream. New outfit CIRCLES make their Bottle debut – featuring members of THE PONYS, FOOTBALL and FRANCE HAS THE BOMB, they create a decidedly melodic garagey racket and the always party-inducing GET DRUNK DJs spin throughout this sweaty night.
