BIRTHMARK, the solo songwriting project of NATE KINSELLA, released a third LP this spring, Antibodies via Polyvinyl. The effort contains all the classic staples that have made the JOAN OF ARC family tree of projects so compelling: sincere, distinctly American minimalism, stream of consciousness lyricism and the inspiring willingness to take the path least traveled through pop music. Lush, expertly constructed songs with a focus on carefully curated and orchestrated instrumentation makes this current KINSELLA project a must listen (and swoon) to piece of inventive tuneage. Led by the quaking and nomadic guitars and vocals of MICHAEL HILGER, THIN HYMNS return to play their intimate folk-minded pop songs, fleshed out live by clattering percussion, ethereal strings and twinkling keyboards. Featuring members of local favorites the 1900s, MAZES have been praised by NPR for their “rich, evocative images, like shattered dreams, long lines, exploding soda cans, black hearts, and dark forests, accompany jaunty guitar solos, upbeat piano interludes, and cheery duets to create an intriguing mix of lows and highs,” and they kick off tonight’s free dream pop extravaganza.
