Playing a combination of black metal, doom and ambient post-rock on their debut EP, Under the Abysmal Light, AUSTARAS play here tonight and test out new material from their upcoming LP. Showcasing an evolution in sound utilizing new elements and sounds, in the words of Lurker, AUSTARAS set themselves “the mammoth task of aligning several strains of post-millennial metal developments and tackle the challenge decisively.” Hailing from the “northern wastes of Illinois,” SIOUM’s debut LP, I Am Mortal, But Was Fiend is a startling effort combining meditative wailing, explosive post rock, metal, classically influenced prog and utilizing instruments you don’t always see in those heavier genres, including e-bow, synths and nylon guitar. Siren Sound goes tells readers, “DO NOT SKIP…RUSSIAN CIRCLES, PELICAN and ISIS fans are in for a treat here…a MASSIVE trip.” Also earning comparisons to ISIS, SLEESTAK crank out doom metal psychedelia on their 2011 release The Fall of Altrusia. A progressive doom concept album, The Sleeping Shaman went so far as to say, “honestly this is epic. Lord of the Rings 2 disc extended edition epic and it is wonderful for the overblown indulgence they have dedicated to its creation.” Openers OYARSA list their influences as "Space. Destruction. Infinity. Doom. Beer." We agree.
