JULIE MARIE BYRNE is a Chicago-based artist making gentle acoustic pop under the radar – until now. On her first LP, You Would Love It Here on Solid Melts, is an earnest and restrained effort and BYRNE’S strong vocals hang back to form a playful and close knit relationship with gently plucked guitar tones. The tight control of vocal inflection, combined with a strong narrative and a frequent direct-address style of songwriting is, in the words of Impose, “extremely evocative and affective.” Featuring members of TIGER HATCHERY, WYOMING and BATTLESHIP, Chicago trio MINES has two tracks up on their SoundCloud page that are bursting with cleverly buried melodies under walls of fuzzy atmospherics. JOHNNY YOUNG is a young, bearded dude, whose Logan Square-recorded Nitetrotter session playing a slide acoustic guitar brings to mind some truly old-timey country and rhythm and blues artists of centuries past. T’BONE’s guitar-oriented debut, Mt. Trashmore takes the seemingly introspective genre of post-rock and adds a dose of ridiculousness to keep things ridiculously fresh, incorporating 70s rock, instrumental math and punk energy into cheekily anthemic tracks, and he opens tonight’s free with RSVP acoustic guitar celebrating show.
