Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
Musician, performance and visual artist ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO traverses the nameless territories held between surrealist automatism, shamanic séance, and the folk imagery of rock and roll. Last year he visited the Bottle with his trance-punk outfit, MALAIKAT DAN SINGA and returns tonight performing solo material recorded during the Spring Equinox using voice, bass clarinet, modified Marantz tape recorded and echoplex. In the words of Reviler, DIONYSO “happens to have a voice that makes TOM WAITS seem like a choir boy,” and The Washington Post says, “you could call it chaos, but DIONYSO seems to know exactly what’s going on at all times.” We’re going to go out on a limb and say this is going to be a live show unlike any you’ve ever experienced before. In the past 6 years, THOLLEM MCDONAS has added 20 albums to his discography on 9 different vanguard labels in 4 different countries. His piano-based music is dramatically diverse and every live experience features MCDONAS exploring a variety of paths to a varying array of outcomes. LAUGHING EYE WEEPING EYE’s performances are akin to watching a vaudevillian storyteller in a medieval church with gospel singers, gnomes, and goats. Unusual vocal layering and instrumentation such as Harmonium, Egyptian Lyre, and Keyboards sounds like a folk dream on an occult journey to the underworld. Arrive early and stay late, and the singer will give you a tarot card reading from a deck she created – a fitting opening to tonight’s musical experimentations.
