Tonight is a buzzy show of world-wide proportions. An international quintet comprising three gentlemen – two English and one American – and two Spanish girls, much buzzed about CRYSTAL FIGHTERS take the notion of melding folk and, dare we say, funk to another level. Listening to the tracks on the Atlantic Records released Star of Love, one gets the feeling of wandering into a rave in a forest in early 20th-century rural Spain. In the words of The Guardian, “instead of sucking at the teat of dance music’s rinsed-out tech boobies, they play a carnivalesque amalgam of all the best bits of ghetto house, punk, Latin electro, South American and Basque folk traditions. Much like JUSTICE before them, at this point London-based IS TROPICAL are likely best known for their eyebrow-raising videos. From the birds & boobs B&W sexy time of “Lies” to the cinematic, 200K+ viewed “South Pacific” to the kid-on-kid color explosion violence of “The Greeks,” those familiar with their videography and Kitsune-powered debut LP Native To can deduce loads about what the band is about. Dabbling with a bit of catchy disco slickness, a dash of moody, guitar-heavy Brit rock and an injection of beachy NEW ORDER gloom, IS TROPICAL remain a “band to watch,” as their overseas antics and signature live show have generated quite the buzz abroad.
