“Her voice has a refreshing rawness, along with deft phrasing and exhilarating instrumental moments”
- London Times
Nailah Porter’s debut CD “ConJazzNess” (pronounced “consciousness”) on Universal Music Group/EmArcy is a tasteful blend of rural jazz and worldly-wise lyricism, crossing over from its be-bop roots to neo-soul hipness. Echoing along a timeless tobacco road sojourn, Nailah’s voice resonates with the spirit of her influences (Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Gil Scott-Heron) and her Southern roots. Honoring that spirit is what moved Nailah to walk away from a lucrative career as an attorney on Capitol Hill.
The North Carolina native has written songs with contemporary jazz artists Billy Childs, Tom Scott and Jeff Lorber and she was personally selected by Mayor Villaraigosa to perform at the City of Los Angeles Heritage Month opening and closing ceremonies, representing the accomplishments and contributions of African-Americans. As the winner of “Jazz Voice of the Year”, Nailah made her London debut performing at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards and recording at the historic BBC Maida Vale Studios with Robert Glasper. Jamie Cullum also featured a live performance of Nailah with her trio at Maide Vale on his BBC show. Nailah is a featured artist on the Brownswood Recordings compilation CD, Brownswood Bubblers Five, and on Nicola Conte’s latest Impulse release, Love & Revolution, along with noted artists, Jose James, Gregory Porter and Tim Warfield. Nailah ‘s music has been featured on the popular FX television show, “The Shield” and she has also recorded and performed internationally with various artists including Beck, Warren G, John Cale (Velvet Underground) and Nicola Conte.
Recently back from her European tour, Nailah is collaborating with Grammy winner and Guggenheim Fellow Billy Childs on her follow-up CD.
