Our access to basic health care is under attack. We have a say – stand with Planned Parenthood and fight back! Tonight's show is a benefit for Planned Parenthood of New York City and will feature New York dream pop band Asobi Seksu and award-winning comedian Sara Benincasa, host of the popular podcast Sex and Other Human Activities.
Featuring Yuki Chikudate and James Hanna, Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for "playful sex") released its self-titled debut album in 2004 to significant critical acclaim, winning rave reviews from The New York Times, Nylon, Under the Radar, YRB, and XLR8R, among others. The band scored a No. 1 video on mtvU's Dean's List with the song "Walk on the Moon," garnered a Top 10 spot on CMJ's radio charts, and became an instant favorite in the New York City scene, playing packed shows at the Bowery Ballroom, Knitting Factory, and Mercury Lounge.
For its second album Citrus (2006), Asobi Seksu headed into Gigantic Studios in New York City to record with producer Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, Tokyo Police Club, Shy Child). The result was tremendous: a powerful, sweeping album, sung in both English and Japanese, which showcased Chikudate and Hanna's ever-growing songwriting skills. The disc received worldwide acclaim and expanded Asobi Seksu's fan base all over the United States and into Europe, Japan, Australia, Korea, and Mexico. When the time came to work on its third LP, the band once again enlisted Zane's production skills and emerged with Hush (2009), another exceptional piece of work. Rewulf, a tour-only album that featured Chikudate and Hanna performing acoustic versions of the band's back catalog, followed later that year.
Asobi Seksu has always been a master of musical textures; gauzy, cloudy dreamscapes for slower songs, and squalls of guitar and daisy-chained effect pedals for the barnstormers. What truly distinguishes this band is that it has now married this ability to a finely honed pop sensibility. The songs this group writes aren't just pretty – they're melodically rich and incredibly catchy as well. As its captivating live show attests, Asobi Seksu has outgrown the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and others, finally realizing its potential as one of New York's greatest bands. The group's latest album, Fluorescence, dropped in 2011.
