Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
Filled with woozy gospel organs and broadly strummed acoustic guitars, Midwest-bred singer-songwriter CORY CHISEL and his crew of country roots-rockers THE WANDERING SONS make their Empty Bottle debut here tonight playing tracks from their upcoming BRENDAN BENSON-produced LP, Old Believers. CHISEL and bandmate ADRIEL HARRIS currently call Nashville home – an easy to understand move when you consider that BENSON and his RACONTEURS band mates LITTLE JACK LAWRENCE and PATRICK KEELER guest on their first EP, Death Won’t Send a Letter, along with MY MORNING JACKET’S CARL BROEMEL. An impressive roster of friends and believers and the new effort is an impressive collection of folk songs that easily swagger into barnburner rock & roll jams. Joining in tonight’s ampersand fest, JON DRAKE & THE SHAKES describe themselves as "country/folk/dirty pop" and with eight players manning trumpets, trombones, cello, violin, organs, upright bass, guitars and drums, it can indeed get crazy and dirty and undeniably fun. Their debut LP, The Declaration of Ulysses was released last month and builds upon the sonic menagerie that boils over in their live shows. DEREK NELSON released the Something Obscure EP at the tail end of 09 and was called "a force to be reckoned with," by Spin, "gently disarming" by Chicago Red Eye and a "songwriting sensation" by Simple Talk and DEREK NELSON & THE MUSICIANS open up tonight’s “& the” celebration with tracks from their Riders of the Tide EP.
