Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
One third of Toronto darkwave trio (and Empty Bottle favorite) AUSTRA, MAYA POSTEPSKI is back with another equally impressive debut, this time as half of TRUST, another similarly gloomy, Toronto-based synth-pop outfit. Joined on vocals and co-production duties by ROBERT ALFONS, the pair’s pallid vocal and frigid synth lines on their debut TRST out via Arts and Crafts, make for some considerably icy and consistently engaging tracks. The LP has been praised as a “fiendishly dark nightcrawler of a debut,” by Pop Matters and “dance music to pump the veins of dead-eyed Goths,” by Pretty Much Amazing, and we have to agree the entire effort plays like that feeling you get when you body’s covered in goose bumps even when the sun is beating down on you – which we mean as a really good thing. Chicago-based gnarly industrial/techno duo VALIS join the party with their cold, dark and spacey jams that sound like they’d be right at home on the eighties influenced synth music found on the Drive soundtrack. In fact, picture your favorite scary movie from the 80s, think of the one scene you remember being both awesome and creepy at the same time, head to VALIS’ Soundcloud page.
