America is looking for electricity that is clean, safe and cheap. Where does nuclear power fit in? This self-paced course, led by Matt Wald, a NYT correspondent who has covered the industry's ups and downs for 30 years, explores the history and prospects of nuclear technology. Is a nuclear renaissance about to begin? About 20 new nuclear reactors are on the drawing boards of American electric companies, which sense that for the first time in 30 years, it is possible to build. New coal plants would face impending rules on mercury, particulates, soot and probably carbon dioxide emissions; the federal government is offering generous financial incentives for new reactors, and nuclear technology has improved, all drawing attention back to nuclear. The course will examine the industry’s history and prospects. The course includes extensive background materials.
