GOMELA! A Bantu word that means “return”.
Kumbuka African Drum & Dance Collective, Louisiana’s premiere African dance company is dedicated to the preservation, presentation, documentation and research of traditional African and African American folklore. Kumbuka has serviced the greater New Orleans area for 30 years providing cultural, educational and enrichment programming to the community. Kumbuka held its’ first dance concert “Ballet Afrique” and its 20th Year Anniversary Concert “Mkale Tai” both at the Contemporary Art Center. Kumbuka is humbled and honored to return to the Contemporary Art Center for its 30th Year Anniversary Concert “GOMELA” in conjunction with Junebug Productions' Homecoming Project.
The concert is in recognition of Kumbuka’s endurance to survive for 30 years, particularly after Hurricane Katrina. The future of Kumbuka was uncertain at that time since members were scattered all over the United States.
GOMELA is in recognition of the endurance of the people of New Orleans.
GOMELA is in recognition of the existence of African people worldwide.
GOMELA is evidence of our Ancestors connection to us.
We have returned to continue to lift up our community in its struggles to remain true to itself.
Kumbuka is a Swahili word that means remember.
We have returned and we remember.
