21 years and over
Few bands in 2011 have generated anywhere near as much hype as unconventional Mancunian quartet WORLD UNITE LUCIFER YOUTH FOUNDATION, or as they’re more widely referenced, WU LYF. Named a “Band To Watch” by Stereogum, awarded “Best New Music” by Pitchfork and recently deemed “Best New Act” at the Q Awards, WU LYF has gained as much attention for their refusal of high-profile interview requests, misleading promo photos and ignoring major label fawning as they have for their music. Which is tricky, because the rawness and emotion found on their singles and release Go Tell Fire to the Mountain, is pretty darn triumphant – full of drum-rolls, guitar chimes, gravel-throated howls, and maddening chants that power through to climaxes that dissolve into rambunctious, exhausted collapse. And in the words of the ‘Fork, “underneath all that bouncing room echo, you hear a band trying to live up to its own hype, unglamorously woodshedding until every arrangement was tight as hell…a sweet spot that feels more limber than rock and too jittery to congeal into a groove like funk, but always in the service of some sort of physicality.” CRYSTAL ANTLERS' sonically shredding, relentless amalgam of psych, garage and prog-rock has made fans of Rolling Stone who has characterized them as easily maintaining "consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend" and we’re pleased to welcome them back to open tonight’s show – one we’re fairly certain will result in some serious “I was there”-type bragging rights in the very near future.
