Nine members strong, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds march upon the Beachland stage tonight with some funk and soul. Singer Arleigh Kincheloe and The Dirty Birds -- guitar, bass, drums, and horns -- raised their sound on a steady of diet of residencies at NYC joints like the Rockwood Music Hall, and then embarked on a load of touring throughout the country. Within six months of their November 2010 debut release on Modern Vintage Recordings, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds had opened for the Black Keys, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, the Rebirth Brass Band, and the Soul Rebels Brass Band, among others. Through appearances at such festivals as moe.down, Strange Creek, Camp Jam, Sterling Stage, and late-night at New Orleans JazzFest, they continued to gain wider acclaim. Woodstock-based singer-songwriter Connor Kennedy opens, along with big, brassy, Akron blues-rockers Scarlet & The Harlots.
