21 years and over
After disappearing from the underground’s hazy spotlight more than 18 years ago, MERCURY REV founder DAVID BAKER returns with an exciting new project alongside WILL MACLEAN, psychedelic pop band VARIETY LIGHTS. The duo made their Empty Bottle debut last October to support their stellar 2012 album Central Flow, out via Fire Records, an album MOJO praises for its “unexpectedly warming tunes from an individual long thought to have an aversion to conventional song forms.” A pair of vintage synth addicts, VARIETY LIGHTS combine analogue textures with electronic psychedelia, an array of drum machines, heavily effected guitars and layered, straining vocals to dizzying results that is sure to thrill in a live setting. Opening is ambient rock band MIRACLE CONDITION, a group who's been dubbed "shoegaze meets post-rock" by RCRD LBL, called "both haunting and beguiling" by Pitchfork and praised for "an angelic bombast displaying a new affinity for sublime space rock" by Time Out Chicago. Brooklyn post-punk trio Fan-tan began in 2007 when Ryan Lee and Sandee K moved from Chapel Hill, NC to Brooklyn, NY. After four years of touring and recording, they met drummer Mike Sherburn while on the road to SXSW in 2011. Fan-tan’s debut LP, A Strange Game, is slated for release in the fall of 2012 on Goodnight Records.
