Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
A founding member of SONIC YOUTH and now in his 30th year as a musician, composer, visual artist, writer, etc., LEE RANALDO is one of the most distinctive and influential guitarists in underground rock. Creating brooding, dreamlike songs that are visceral and lyrically-charged, RANALDO's songwriting has expanded, reaching more into the traditional rock and pop worlds than the acoustic and noise-infested albums of past. Currently in the process of finishing his second solo record, a follow-up to 2012's bleak but hypnotic Between the Times & the Tides, the fully self-penned, song-based album is a much more band-oriented affair. After a year of touring behind the last record, the band is now fully road-tested, featuring former SONIC YOUTH drummer STEVE SHELLEY, ALAN LICHT, and new bassist TIM LUNTZEL. They will be joined here by Chicago's very own BROKEBACK, who play here tonight for the first time since opening for THE SEA & CAKE in 2011. We're excited to welcome them back to our stage and to hear songs off their newest album, this year's excellent, sprawling Brokeback and the Black Rock, another excellent LP put out by the fine folks at Thrill Jockey. One half of the band BOKEH, MYKEL BOYD is an experimental sound and visual artist who also runs the record label Somnimage. He returns to our stage tonight, opening what is sure to beliterally one million times better than sitting on your couch watching football.
