21 years and over
24-year old Dutch multi-instrumentalist JACCO GARDNER returns tonight for the first time since making his Chicago debut at the Bottle this past spring. After releasing a criminally limited 7-inch in Europe earlier in 2012, GARDNER released a dense, double dose of hits on his 2013-released LP for Trouble In Mind. Where Will You Go is that record and it is a lurching, dreamy baroque-pop groover, with lush melodies cascading over driving drumbeats that conjure up images of SYD BARRET jamming with Revolver-era BEATLES. Heavenly psychedelic, GARDNER plays gem after gem, maneuvering his way around the various eras he visits and escaping the trappings of rip-offdom by creating a unique and stirring new approach. Whether solo or as a cog in bands PONYTAIL and ECSTATIC SUNSHINE, guitarist DUSTIN WONG likes to push the sonic envelope and tonight he is joined by fellow synth & guitar composer/singer-songwriter TAKAKO MINEKAWA. Balancing composition and waves of experimentation, WONG & MINEKAWA constructan ongoing atmospheric soundtrack on their 2013 Thrill Jockey release, Toropical Circle, a lovely balance of homemade coziness, experimentation and charming humor, Their musicality and human qualities galvanized into something brilliantly heartwarming. Minimal synth-babe MATCHESS, aka WHITNEY JOHNSON from VERMA and E+, opens the show with a set of sparse rhythms, synthetic melodies, squealing guitar lines and heavily-affected vocals that combine to create an alien, futuristic sound.
