Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
Started in Boston in 1987, the CHEATER SLICKS have built a huge body of recorded trash-garage-noise-melancholy pop-psychedelic dementia-rock n’ roll that has gone largely unrecognized by the music press and has made many garage rock purists run for the door. Their music is sometimes abstract and always intrusive and confrontational. Real connoisseurs of truly intense music have recognized the brilliance of this criminally over-looked band. The band toured heavily with the likes of the JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION, MUDHONEY and the RED AUNTS, playing shows at a deafening volume while gaining a much larger fan base. Likened to the VELVET UNDERGROUND and SPACMEN 3, ENERGY GOWN follows the proto-motorik code for live performances churning up heady chants in extended experimentation. One of our favorite local finds of last year, ENERGY GOWN are a strange take on the psychedelia, foggy fancy, and dark arts from discoveries made in a dim Chicago basement. Newly-christened Chicago band NEGATIVE SCANNER who formed out of the ashes of one of our favorite recently-departed garage rock bands, TYLER JON TYLER, will be playing a set of their darker, twisted guitar-drums-bass pop that feels a whole lot like a punch to the nuts. And as we all know, a punch to the nuts is the best way to start off a night like this.
