Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
At a time when most female singer-songwriters perform as alter egos, ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER is simply, refreshingly herself. Having spent the last decade fronting the indie-rock institution THE FIERY FURNACES (currently on hiatus) with her brother Matthew, ELEANOR emerged as a formidable solo artist in 2011 with her debut album, Last Summer. While that record was a thoughtfully crafted tale of memory and place couched in 1970s pop, her new album, Personal Record, out via Merge on June 4, is straight jangle-pop with guts, glory and all the grit you could want. It's personal, sure, and lyrically touches on love, or love lost, but it's also universally incisive - so much so that most listeners will feel as though the songs were written about them. Buzzy Brooklynites TEEN will be touring with FRIEDBERGER and tonight they make their Bottle debut, bringing a fresh dose of psychedelic indie-rock that chugs and churns with pulsing beats and haunting melodies. Their debut album, In Limbo, released last August via Carpark, is a harmony-laden wall of sound that blasts listeners into outer space with propulsive grooves, swirling synths and lush vocals. Kicking off tonight's show is Chicago-based quartet VIDEOTAPE. Their mix of indie-pop, shoegaze and noisy undercurrents create a dense cloud of atmospherics for an ethereal and wistful sound. Their debut LP, This Is Disconnect, came out last year and was one of the more dynamic and captivating local record we listened to last year. Be sure and get here early, kids.
