21 years and over
BLACK PUS is the solo project of drummer BRIAN CHIPPENDALE, an artist you may know as one-half of monstrous noise-rock titans and Empty Bottle vets LIGHTNING BOLT. CHIPPENDALE started home-recording material in the mid 2000s and released his first record as BLACK PUS, Primordial Pus, on Load Records in 2011. Integrating that album's "pop" sensibilities with CHIPPENDALE's furious drumming and sonic maximalism, BLACK PUS released their second full-length, All My Relations, on Thrill Jockey in early 2013. The album bears a snarl and a smile, the sound of wild abandon that is both aggressive and inviting, as it combines the simple elements of drums, vocals, and an oscillator triggered by the kick drum, looping and repeating phrases and rhythms in a way that is both chaotic and meditative. Since rising from the ashes of the now defunct CACAW, local sound experimenters OOZING WOUND have made quite a name for themselves over the past year. Dropping the weirdness of their previous band, OOZING WOUND dives straight into intense, repetitive, disorienting, industrial-tinged thrash metal. Michigan-based narrative synth-proggers MOUNDS open tonight's show of noisy, delicious oddities.
