Brooklyn’s ZS is more than a band, they’re a genre. Lumped in with such subgenres as no-wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, ZS is primarily concerned with creating music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of performer and listener. 2012 saw the release of SCORE – the complete sextet works 2002 – 2007, out via Northern Spy, and they’ll be touring as a trio featuring PATRICK HIGGINS on guitar, the alien drumming of GREG FOX (GUARDIAN ALIEN, LITURGY), and saxophonist SAM HILLMER. The New York Times hails ZS for creating “conceptual art objects that set form and content against each other – like, say, a perfect birthday cake made out of sawdust, or a perfect hammer made out of feathers.” While we're on the subject of extraterrestrial drummer GREG FOX, his latest project GUARDIAN ALIEN is making their Bottle debut tonight. Their 2012 LP See The World Given to a One Love Entity, out on Thrill Jockey last July, really blew a lot of people's brains out of their eye sockets with its wild and unpredictable psychedelia. A free-wheeling ensemble who found the right balance between structured arrangements and reckless abandon, GUARDIAN ALIEN is both meditative and muscular, driven by an intensity that is expansive, focused and heavy on multiple levels, all while retaining an open-eyed playfulness. The band takes their sound to another dimension live and we're stoked to have both of these sonic spaceships landing on our stage tonight.
