Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
Tonight’s Monday evening show may not be free, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited to get buck-wild with us on a school night – just don’t tell mom and dad and sneak out the window! Up and coming transgender rapper MYKKI BLANCO is a New York poet and performance artist named MICHAEL QUATTLEBAUM who thrives on “shock-rock” tactics and claims he’d “rather be famous like Insane Clown posse than like A$AP Rocky.” Gaining a following and some serious cred in the blurry “rap” underground as of late, MYKKI is a cartoonish character that sounds cute but is probably criminally insane. Unfiltered sinister, sexually explicit lyrics spew out in a heavily filtered voice atop acid-laced beats that are alarmingly catchy and creepy, as seen in last year’s LP, CosmicAngel: The Illuminati Prince/ss. BANJEE REPORT is a movement documenting the gay experience in hip-hop and other music through a series of mixtapes that challenge norms within the often homophobic hip-hop arena. The group also records a weekly podcast and hosts parties at Wang’s Gentlemen’s Lounge and they’ll be making their Bottle debut tonight, hand-picked by Miss Blanco herself. THE GTW is a Chicago-based vocalist/producer that blends urban soulfulness and progressive experimentation that influenced by left-field R&B, downtempo house, UK 2-step garage, bohemian hip-hop and elements of his Nigerian heritage. It’s an eclectic but smooth, dark and atmospheric sound that’s been called everything from “global-fi” to “tribal bass” – buzz words aside, THE GTW is an exciting new voice in the city’s already vibrant hip-hop community.
