The Pennsylvania based quintet, The Better Letters, started as a New Yorkian synth-pop duo. With the help of a Gemini Beat Box, Joe Palumbo would write catchy micro-pop gems that were centered around the gesticulations and modern dances of friend and keyboard champion, Abraham Something. They quickly increased their numbers by adding Ben Brunnemer, Steve Goldberg, and Darryl Specht and soon after completed their debut album, Mixed Feelings (4:3 records). The band acquired Brunnemer after pulling him out of a DJ gig at an underground gay club in the West Village and convinced him he needed to get back in the guitar game. The following week, Goldberg was pushed off a conference call in the lobby of The Tribeca Grand. The guys convinced Goldberg (who was referred by a mutual friend) to cut that garbage out and get behind the drums again. Fashion enthusiast and recreational Mennonite, Darryl Specht joined the band as the bass player after being promised things that he has still yet to receive. Despite being hustled into the band, Specht stuck around because he loved the music, but mostly because he was offered full dental.
We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves music is untethered and reckless in a way that most New York jangle groups miss. It’s almost as if an Allied Barton security agent lightly drunk on Mexican beer fell asleep in his booth at the Polar Bear Ice plant in Queens and dreamed up an exacting combination of Pavement, Die Schmidts, and the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, The Eggs sound both ethereal and playfully discordant -- their unique musicality owing just as much to influences like Battles and Radiohead as they do to Debussy, John Williams and Miles Davis. The Eggs' arrangements possess a narrative and cinematic quality that echoes throughout curiously unexpected chord changes, intricate rythmic textures, and melodic interplay between violin and vocals. Their fully mastered EP Patterns was released in October 2012.
