The past year was an auspicious one for saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane. He made his Blue Note Records debut with the album Spirit Fiction, featuring two different band lineups that included both members of his working group and special guests Geri Allen, Joe Lovano, and Ralph Alessi. Radiating “a quietly adventurous artistry and a serene self-confidence” (Zachary Woolfe, NY Times, 8/10/2012), Spirit Fiction earned its creator a Grammy Award nomination for the track “Crossroads” in the category of Best Improvised Jazz Solo. This week at Jazz Standard, we celebrate the artistry of Ravi Coltrane in performance with three different thrilling quartets (Tim Hagans and Jason Palmer trade off in the trumpet slot on 2/28 and 3/1).
