Just in time for their 20th anniversary as a label, MATMOS has joined the famed Chicago label Thrill Jockey's roster to release their new album The Marriage of True Minds, coming out early this year. The Baltimore-based electronic duo has been relatively silent over the past five years, but the new effort is driven by a tightly unified conceptual agenda: telepathy. The band conducted their own version of the parapsychological Ganzfield Experiment (with a twist) and used their findings to shape the concept of the record. The result is a broad swath of musical styles, chalk full of guest musicians and sonic tactics, that's joined together by the common purpose of translating this experiment into a delirious hybrid of conceptual noise and electronic pop. Fellow Baltimore-based quartet HORSE LORDS is tagging along for a quick tour with MATMOS and they're here supporting their debut record, 2012's self-titled effort, out via Ehse Records. Their muscular, neck-snapping math rock dances to swinging grooves and shifting rhythms and the album was a top five album of 201 in the Baltimore City Paper, where the band's live show was hailed as a "consistently transcendent explosion." Minimal synth-babe MATCHESS, aka WHITNEY JOHNSON from VERMA and E+, will open the show with a set of sparse rhythms, synthetic melodies, squealing guitar lines and heavily-affected vocals that combine to create an alien, futuristic sound that will surely reward any and all who show up early.
