Sold out every year since 2005, The Johnny Cash Birthday Bash is New York City's annual celebration of the Man in Black. The show stars Brooklyn songwriter Alex Battles and his band The Whisky Rebellion playing a barn-raising set of Cash hits and rarities. Each year archivist Clinton McClung contributes a new selection of rare Cash television and film performances. The show opens with a set of Battles' original tunes. "Brilliant. Lowbrow. Country crooner Alex Battles' Johnny Cash Birthday Bash." - New York Magazine Alex Battles grew up listening to the music of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams in Ohio. He started writing songs in the classic style of his idols after moving to New York City. In 2004, he founded both the Brooklyn Country Music Festival to showcase local songwriters and the CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree to keep the music of country music's golden age burning brightly. Battles also teaches songwriting at The Jalopy School of Music.
