Emily Cross was born one November night in the Midwest. She grew up in the Southern region of Florida, and now lives, sings, and works in Chicago, IL.
Great Life came into existence on a crisp autumn day in 2010, gathering the supple voice and gentle uke of Hannah Newman, Chris DeBoo's resolute bass underpinnings and the steady rhythms of Marty O'Donnell on drums. Quickly building a following within the academic oasis of Champaign-Urbana, the ensemble found itself sharing the stage with contemporaries such as Caribou, Jookabox and Chris Bathgate. A bout of studio time resulted in the band's inaugural release in mid-2011, a refreshingly concise EP entitled Azure. A brief hiatus brought the group to Chicago where they were joined by keyboardist Zach Long. Their efforts redoubled and reinvigorated, the quartet forges ahead with a melodious brand of pop rock which simultaneously seeks to brighten days and open minds.
“Singing is all of pure joy to me. I am excited to exhibit my voice in a way that is closest to the naturalness of singing live where the depths of the words are elevated out of your mouth without hesitation.” - Nat Brooke
