MAWRCREST is a Chicago power trio exploring new horizons and journeying through the sonic wasteland in hopes of discovering what defines an “American” band.” Listeners get to experience a band reinterpreting the soul of a century’s worth of popular music through the fractured lens of avant garde rock. Ex-WILLOWZ leader RICHIE FOLLIN is one talented dude. After playing guitar in his little sister MADELINE’s band CULTS, a group you may know by now, he started writing GUARDS and recording debut record, In Guards We Trust, with former WILLOWZ drummer LOREN HUMPHREY and a slew of collaborators ranging from his sis to CHAIRLIFT singer CAROLINE POLACHEK, and the result is a thrilling, original effort that’s fun as hell. Direct and punchy but sprinkled with hints of British psych and California sunshine, FOLLIN and GUARDS pull from the shine of 70s power-pop, the big guitar choruses of Grunge, psych rock, straightforward 60s garage rock/soul and little bit of early New Wave to create a sound that’s as timeless as it is completely new and fresh. Lo-fi bedroom pop songwriter J FERNANDEZ has become a staple in the Chicago scene of DIY weirdos, animators, freak folkers and rabble rousers. Mr. FERNANDEZ’s music is that of a timeless piñata, like an old penny that’s made the rounds and been touched by many hands and we love the tapes he’s released on Teen River and Pretty All Right.
