What can be said of the Irish that has not been said before? Plenty, if you’re Brian FitzGerald and Marty McCormack of the duo Switchback. For over 25 years, this award-winning duo has celebrated the land of their forefathers, Ireland, in song and story. FitzGerald and McCormack have written many Irish songs that ring as true as the ancient ballads of Finn MacCool’s time and yet, as Irish-Americans, their sound carries a musical distillation that rings Irish but with a slight bluegrass aftertaste.
The Irish Music Association named them as the Top Duo for North America, Ireland, UK, and Europe in 2008 and they have again been nominated for this award for 2013. But it is their Americana originals that have attracted the interest of producers such as Grammy-winner Lloyd Maines, who has produced two of their albums and is currently working on a third, Kanoka. Two concert specials directed by Emmy-winning Jack Ginay of WTTW Chicago have been airing on PBS stations throughout the U.S. Switchback’s music has also garnered commercial success, with Chevy Blazer using the song “Climb That Mountain” in a television advertisement. They have recently started working with Paul Von Mertens, the composer of the Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin album. Mertens and Switchback will be releasing three full scores of their music for regional orchestras in 2013.
Beyond all this work, the duo maintains an active performance schedule with 200 engagements each year at performing arts centers and festivals throughout North America and Europe.
