Upon reading this, you might think, “Oh, Soul Asylum? Didn’t their frontman Dave Pirner date Winona Ryder, who during the 90s was THE hottest thing sitting at the right hand of God?” (Of course, there are many who might think the same of Pirner). Of course, there’s the Soul Asylum who slipped in through MTV’s grunge-colored stage door with tunes like “Black Gold”, “Runaway Train” and “Somebody To Shove”. Yet, we’d like to gently remind the reader that Soul Asylum’s discography, firmly rooted in the rich musical soil of Minneapolis that birthed bands like Husker Du and The Replacements. Given that heritage, albums like Hang Time and The Horse They Rode In On are truly rich in smart, surly rock that knows no stylistic boundaries. Through myriad releases and lineup changes, Soul Asylum has stood steadfast to the present day, even to releasing Delayed Reaction last year. The version of Soul Asylum that played on this album -- Michael Bland (from Prince’s New Power Generation), multi-instrumentalist Winston Roye, and guitarist Justin Sharbono -- lets Pirner explore a torchier and more soulful side of Soul Asylum than one might expect. And with this lineup joining him on tour, don’t count Dave Pirner as washed-up, by any means. Expect great energy and timeless tunes. Opening is Miles Nielsen (son of Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen) who’s not just a great midwestern engineer and producer, but a roots-rock songwriter as well.
