Some 30 years ago, Jeff “Tain” Watts’ professional career commenced with his long running drum tenure in the bands of Wynton and Branford Marsalis. He went on to gig and/or record with Kenny Garrett, Alice Coltrane, the late Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Greg Osby and with the Mingus Big Band on their 2010 Grammy winning CD Live at Jazz Standard. Indeed, seven different recordings on which he appears have won Grammy Awards. To date, “Tain” was issued seven albums as a leader including the incendiary live set DeTAINed at the Blue Note (2004) and his latest CD, Family, released April 2011 on his own imprint Dark Key Music. “Combining muscle and finesse, Watts is a startling technician with an uncanny ability to parse out time and reconfigure it to great effect, always driving the music and his bandmates forward.
