Dig the circumnavigatin’, cut-and-paste, sample-mad musical world we live in. Hip-hop MCs, producers and DJs raid vinyl stocks for soul sounds of yesterday that they can use in their work; decades later, singers like (let’s just use one example for now) Amy Winehouse help re-introduce mainstream listeners (who usually like hip-hop to some extent) to the soul sounds borrowed by these producers and MCs, who then wake up and say, “Wait, why crib some records when I’ve got a modern version of what I’ve been looking for all along?” The wheel keeps on turning, folks, and the old stuff gets reshined and put out there. Why? Cos it’s still good. ZZ Ward’s one of those singers who, like the aforementioned Winehouse and even Adele, channels classic blues and soul in such a way that sounds fresh to a new generation of listeners. Delta Rae, a folk-influenced band comprised of the Holljes brothers and sister, play the tunes that endeared them to moguls like Seymour Stein. Young UK blues and folk singer Martin Harley opens.
