21 years and over
One-man project of LUIS VASQUEZ, THE SOFT MOON brings new life to the darkly hypnotic sounds of dark-wave precursors like SUICIDE, JOY DIVISION and BAUHAUS with a stripped-down, lo-fi approach. Similarly inspired by his Afro-Cuban heritage and the wide-open space of the Mojave Desert where he was raised, THE SOFT MOON’s evolution over the past few years has seen a trio of excellent releases on the esteemed Captured Tracks. The most recent, 2012’s Zeros is a complete immersion in rumbling, eerie strangeness that continues the path of darkness, claustrophobia and dread VASQUEZ has been following, a musical wasteland marred by jagged post-punk, atmospheric dark wave and a Motorik tic that gets bodies jerking uncontrollably when witnessed live. MAJICAL CLOUDZ is music and performance – strong vocals sit atop washes of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds to create songs that are intensely lyrical, surrounding themes of death, patience, family and desire. Live, this production duo of Toronto’s DEVON WALSH and MATTHEW OTTO celebrates the joy of sorrow and the value of shared musical experiences. Minimalist folk trio PILLARS AND TONGUES’ haunting, almost spiritual pieces swirl around your head and heart like ghosts and we are excited to hear the music from their newest tape, If Travel is Asked of me, to open tonight’s diverse show. One of our favorites, DJ Peroxide will be spinning the dark and synthy and apocalyptic sounding tunes throughout the night.
