Will Ferrell stars as the lovable and naïve Buddy, adopted as an infant by a kind Papa Elf (a hilariously understated Bob Newhart) and raised at the North Pole.  He journeys to New York City to meet his estranged human family (including James Caan and Mary Steenburgen), where he gets a tough and funny lesson about the real world, all the while maintaining his infectious enthusiasm and changing those around him for the better.
