Wussy plus The Sundresses

Up from Cincinnati come Beachland favorites Wussy, with tales of woe and wonder after touring with the now-reunited Afghan Whigs. Not unlike those now-famed Cincy compadres, Wussy’s sound feels oh-so-uniquely underground Ohio: fully nasty and dirty guitars; a rambling and ramshackle rhythm section that plows ahead regardless of beer count; songs that somehow bring to mind slow punk and honky-tonk without being either; and lyrics that look at life in a sideways fashion, brought to us by former The Ass Ponys head Chuck Cleaver and vocalist/guitarist Lisa Walker. As noted critic Robert Christgau wrote, “Small, but about perfect, with Walker handling the human detail and Cleaver tossing off metaphors--a sideshow horse, a shunt to drain the fear from his brain. It's an ideal partnership--vocally and lyrically, Walker grounds the old guy and he lifts her. The band sound is more Velvets than Burritos, yet country still. It's as if they've reduced all of white Ohio to an articulated drone, unlocked a silo or warehouse of hummable tunes, and worked out the harmonies.” Cincy band The Sundresses and Cleveland band Oldboy.
