One of the great things about being part of Cleveland’s ever-growing music scene is seeing how artist trajectories shift and morph over the years. Years ago, This Moment In Black History were being nationally touted in some circles as a “next big thing”. But this Cleveland four-piece never really worried about how they fit into some mag’s taste palette. Rather, they just concentrated on writing, recording, and musically giving back to the community that bred them and their unrelenting Midwestern punk rock ethos. That’s why their 4th full length, Higher > Deffer is coming out on Smog Veil Records, a West Coast-based label that’s embraced many of the great punk bands that put Ohio on the map. TMIBH are real-deal lifers, committed to an uncompromising yet hopeful stance that comes from representing Cleveland. We’ve also seen multi-instrumentalist Mike Baranick, i.e. Mikey Machine, shift from the high-strung power pop of Machine Go Boom to the near-metal power of instrumental rock band Megachuch. Tonight he brings his latest rock ensemble, a three-piece called The Safeties that might occasionally bring to mind the Buzzcocks. Another grad from the mid 2000s Cleveland scene, Hot Cha Cha, has been reincarnated as powerhouse trio goldMINES. What’s good about Cleveland? Come find out tonight.
